Three thyroid terms, explained
TSH
A signal from the pituitary that helps assess thyroid function.
T4
A thyroid hormone that the body can convert to T3.
T3
An active thyroid hormone. Free T3 differs from total T3.
TSH is an important screening test. Additional tests are not automatically needed; their usefulness depends on your history and clinical situation. This guide inventories test names and does not interpret results.
